RULES FOR CRAFTING THE PERFECT OUTFIT

The perfect outfit: every fashion-lover’s Mona Lisa.

Visual music, to our gifted (judgmental) eyes.

True Wandelust. Second best to designer drugs (completely up to your own interpretation here)

It is not uncommon for friends and family to seek my guidance when in need for that perfect outfit for a special gathering or event, aka the scoop on the magic, one-fits-all, top-trendiest, city-hip, high-end, you will find me on the runway when I am not at this event, outfit.

Call me old-fashioned, but I have always seen fashion on the same level as falling in love.

1. Identify the rules

The first thing to do when beginning the quest for the perfect outfit is to identify what the dress code to your event is, because just like in dating you don’t want to be talking baby names when you are simply “right now girl” or rocking your Dolce Gabbana gown to a casual affair.

Most parties, events and venues will have suggested dress codes included on the invite itself, but if that is not the case, you can usually find photos on the event’s, or venue’s Google listing, Yelp page or Website Gallery.

In addition to figuring out the suggested dress code, I also like to know the layout of the event beforehand. Knowing whether it is outdoors, a lot of walking is required, there are heaters, or seating areas is great information to know when picking your shoes and accessories.

2. Know what color works best for you

This rule is pretty simple – if you are really pale or have a “cool skin tone” you should probably avoid yellow or white altogether and go for neutral or cool tones, while the tab babes can rock bright bold colors and light colors without fading away.

Make a mental note of the best colors that work for your skin tone and rock those.

Or for some extra fun and a thinner look, hit the beach or local spray tan shop.

3. Know what makes you happy

Just like in a relationship, knowing what you want and like are key to finding the perfect outfit for your next din din.

The worse decision any girl can make is purchase something they have never tried on, or feel uncomfortable in just because somebody you admire/style crush on looks fab wearing it.

Just like guys, clothes and styles are not created equal and not every guy will work for every girl.

4. Know your deal breakers

What makes you tick? For me, it is always my outfit photographing poorly and making me regret even buying it in the first place.

If you are like me and always wish you were 15 pounds lighter or want to look slimmer, shying away from clothes that are skin-tight is a must.

Just because an outfit looks great in the dressing room, doesn’t mean it will look great after you have had dinner, 4 cocktails and cannot maintain good posture to save your life (this is the complete opposite when meeting guys btw).

Give yourself some padding by opting for dresses/outfits that have a solid foundation and shape your body automatically.

Outfits from designer stores and high-end retailers are usually a safe bet.

5. Be daring.

Cutie at the bar not making a move fast enough? Send them a drink.

Before leaving the house make sure you incorporate something that is unique and you cannot wear everyday. Some examples of this include: the sexy expensive shoes that are sitting in your closet, oversized coats, anything fur, anything that is sparkly, anything oversized.

Dressing up and finding the perfect outfit should be an intimate affair – so remember to do what works for YOU – and if you need a second opinion or push, my inbox Is wide open.
